After the public exposure of the plans of the Minister of Science and Education Valery Falkov to lobby himself or his deputy Denis Sekirinsky for the post of rector of the main university in the country with multi-billion dollar funding, the Falkov-Sekirinsky team began to eliminate their competitors.

The situation is fueled by the fact that if Fedorov's students and protégés, recently noted by Putin (Ivan Oseledets, Evgeny Burnaev, Alexander Gasnikov), are called contenders for top positions in Russian science and education, then why shouldn't Fedorov himself be considered a serious rival? Therefore, the academics from Moscow State University have long paid attention to Fedorov's potential and capabilities and decided to use the ministry to remove their competitor from the race.
